Relaxation Garden

Client:

British Academy of Garden Design

Year:

2022

I created a low-maintenance garden with flowering plants that stay green throughout the year. The garden consists of three levels with two terraces. The first terrace, made of durable teak wood, is attached to the house at ground level. Teak wood was chosen for its resistance to rotting and longevity. Over time, it develops a silver-grey color that matches the concrete flooring of the garden.

Underneath the crabapple tree included in the terrace, I created a patio space with modern furniture and a designer led light feature. To add visual interest, I installed a large mirror and two replica paintings by Miro on the right side of the terrace.

I incorporated a rectangular pond that spans the width of the garden. Three concrete steps in the middle allow crossing the pond. Lavender, alliums and globe thistles are planted at both ends of the pebble paths surrounding the pond, adding visual variety.

Beyond the pond, concrete stairs lead up the slope.

The second level terrace, made of concrete, showcases sun-loving plants. The left side of the terrace features three concrete pots matching the floor, planted with aromatic herbs. The right side is designed as a coffee corner with a view of the lower parts of the garden. The back of the terrace is enclosed by a 1-meter-high decorative concrete wall, adorned with hanging plants from the floor above. The entire installation is illuminated with recessed spotlights.

Concrete stairs, rotated by 70 degrees, lead to the final level of the garden. The top level features different flowers in pink-purple-green colour scheme. Towards the back on the left, there is a black-painted wooden garden shed. The oil tank, positioned next to the shed, is visually separated from the rest of the garden by a screen that matches the shed's design. This relocation maintains proportion and balance in the garden, creating an impression of a larger space. On the right side of the top level, there is an existing crabapple tree that remains untouched, serving as a beautiful shade provider in the south-exposed garden.

All the selected plants complement each other in terms of color schemes and flowering periods, ensuring a green garden throughout the year.
